The atmosphere of the Grotto is as unique as its pizza.
The Grotto Pizzeria and Tavern in Trenton opened just last October, but owner Chris Hancock already has plans to expand.
“We are adding more cooler space, a private room for parties, and more parking,” Hacock says. “The Grotto has been successful beyond our wildest expectations.” Much of that good fortune stems from the restaurant’s unique stone oven pizza. “Our pizza is baked at a higher temperature than conventional pizzas,” he continues. “The dough rests right on the stone and sort-of caramelizes. It comes out of the oven a golden brown.”
The atmosphere of the Grotto is as unique as its pizza. Hancock describes the environment as reminiscent of the inside of a French castle. “The interior is long and invitingly dark,” he says. “People really enjoy it.” Wine lovers will find themselves right at home: the Grotto features a choice of fine wines, both imported and domestic, and Hancock plans to expand the wine list as well. The restaurant also offers a full bar that includes some popular local craft beers.
Besides stone oven pizza, the Grotto menu features sandwiches and homemade Italian dishes. “People have told us they really enjoy our calamari, cheese bread, and calzone,” Hancock says. “We also serve a terrific London broil sandwich.” Yet good food doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. “We take pride in the quality of our menu,” he adds, “but we keep prices very reasonable.”
A veteran restaurateur, Hancock also owns the Round House BBQ in Trenton. He is a lifelong resident of the Downriver area and a graduate of Lincoln Park High School. He currently resides on Grosse Ile with Susan, his wife of 24 years. The couple has four children, Jon, Josh, Jamie and Stephanie, all of whom, along with Susan, have worked in the family business at one time or another. Josh currently heads up the family’s construction business.
The Grotto Pizzeria and Tavern is located at 2441 Van Horn Rd. in Trenton. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and also offers catering services and delivery.
