Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman
Dr. Charles Mok is the founder of Allure Medical Spa, where he has helped patients in preemptive care. His book, Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman, explores the use of testosterone in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). In the forward to his book, Dr. Mok writes, “Hormone status should be considered during most adult care, but isn’t.” (iii). His book discusses the myths that have created fear over HRT and the result of latest research that shows the benefits of using testosterone during menopause. Not only does HRT help combat symptoms, but it helps reduce the chances of breast cancer as well.
In what Dr. Mok calls the “power of fear,” research on the relation between HRT and breast cancer has caused many women to just deal with their menopausal symptoms. Using estrogen and a synthetic, rather that natural, progestin can cause a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer in menopausal women. This is because estrogen stimulates the breast tissue, which, combined with the synthetic progestin, can open the receptors in the breast tissue even more to the growth of cancer cells. Dr. Mok argues that the use of testosterone can actually calm the estrogen receptors in the breast, thus leading to a decrease in risk.
While breast cancer remains a focus of the book and one of the reasons why Dr. Mok decided to write it, Testosterone gives women a clear guide into the benefits of using HRT as they age. Other benefits explained in the book include weight loss; lower risk for other cancers and heart disease; and reduction in hot flashes, hair loss, and bone loss. The book also debunks rumors of serious health problems that are said to be caused by HRT, such as Alzheimer’s, which Dr. Mok presents with peer-reviewed research.
Testosterone is written with limited medical jargon, which makes it easy to understand for the average reader. It presents the benefits of HRT and testosterone for women experiencing menopause in a clear and concise way. By citing research, Dr. Mok shows how doctors came to conclusions of why HRT works. He also references research that shows how the negative rumors about HRT have spread.
Menopause is a difficult time during a woman’s life, but Dr. Mok’s book can help them seek treatment to alleviate their symptoms. While some women may have fear of receiving HRT, Testosterone offers them information and advice regarding the treatment. Dr. Mok says that women do not need to just deal with the menopausal symptoms but can spend more time living their lives to the fullest by addressing them.
