Salute to Service: Downriver Community Clinic

The physicians and professional staff at Downriver Community Clinic, formerly known as the Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured and founded by Riverview physician Dr. E.C. Bush, understand how important it is to stay healthy as well as be able to afford treatment.

As a result, all of Downriver Community Clinic’s preventive care and diagnostic services are completely free. According to clinic administrator Nancy Zack, “Our services at the Clinic are absolutely free. There could be fees if we refer patients to a specialist, and the fees are usually reduced substantially for our patients. We help patients navigate the health system and insurance options available in order to minimize further financial distress.” In addition to providing such free services as physical exams, diagnostic testing, women’s health care, and cancer screenings, the Clinic also offers health education programs and an outstanding prescription assistance program.

In terms of health education programs, locals can take advantage of the Clinic’s classes that encourage weight loss, promote effective stress management techniques, advance management of diabetes or pre-diabetic control, and more. “Our classes are provided by qualified volunteers and, in the past, we have had excellently trained volunteers who have helped patients succeed,” Zack remarks, listing weight loss, asthma management, nutritious cooking, smoking cessation, and breakthroughs in major or traumatic health issues as examples of such success.

Downriver Community Clinic also assists patients with prescription prices. “We help patients apply for assistance to major pharmaceutical companies whenever possible,” Zack explains. “Our physicians write prescriptions for generic medications as appropriate, and we have software to help patients find the nearest location with the lowest price for their medications. If a patient was not able to obtain their medication because of financial distress, we find a way to help them.”

The wellness classes and prescription assistance program stem from Downriver Community Clinic’s desire for patients to receive necessary care, health education, and quality comprehensive treatment while removing the financial concern that can cause patients to delay diagnosis or see a physician. “Our physicians and all of our volunteers care about our patients and that is why we are here,” says Zack, adding that Dr. Donna Angell, who has a practice in Allen Park, is one such volunteer. “We don’t want any patients to forego care because they can’t afford a doctor visit.”
